Forest For The Trees is a non-profit project dedicated to the creation of contemporary public art in Portland.
This year, in addition to building the event’s web presence, I had the opportunity to put some paint on a wall. Having spent so long now as a designer, I couldn’t help but tackle the mural from a typographic angle. For years now, the prevailing theme from an ancient Japanese poem by renowned poet Matsuo Basho has resonated with me. In his late 17th Century work Oku no Hosomichi, Basho asserts to his reader that “every day is a journey, and the journey itself home.”
As I gear up to leave Rip City and travel north to start a new journey in Seattle, I can’t help but be comforted by this idea. Home is everyone who has gotten me where I am today, and everyone who I’ll meet as I keep going.
